"La calçotada"

diumenge, 2 de març del 2008

Hello everybody!!!

Today, my family and some friends, we have celebrated “La calçotada” for lunch. It’s a popular Catalan tradition, because the calçots were born in Catalonia, and it is celebrated around these days.
For this reason I’ve decided to talk about this vegetable called calçot.

The growing of this onion takes up to a year before they are ready; however 20 million Calçots are grown every year.
The season of calçots starts in November, and usually it finishes in April. However, the traditional time to eat this vegetable is in February. This is another reason because I want to tell you something about its.
The calçot is a species of white onion which grows and when it is ripe, it is replanted in the farming land. Between October, November and December the farmer plant his seed. When the vegetable has grown and it is like an onion, they are harvested in July. They are left to rest for a while, then they remove the outer leaves and they are replanted. And finally, they are carefully harvested at the beginning of the Calçots season so they can be enjoyed by family and friends.

At first, we have grilled them until their leaves were black and then wrapped in newspaper to keep them warm until they were eaten. After a while, we’ve eaten them with a special sauce made from garlic, roasted hazelnuts, roasted almonds, tomatoes, olive oil, red paprika and salt. The second dish has been a grilled lamb.
We do this celebration every year, and the calçots are a curious food because it isn’t usual, not everybody know them and not everybody like them.
I think that it’s very funny the way like we have eaten the calçots, because it’s difficult that you don’t get dirty; the face and the arms left very black from the calçot’s coal.
